Year 7 Catch-Up Premium

Background

In 2013, the Government introduced the Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-Up Premium. The purpose of this was to enable secondary schools to help support all students who did not achieve the expected standard in their Key Stage 2 SATs.

In 2020, the Year 7 Catch-Up Premium was withdrawn.

Strategy

Lady Manners School strives to attain the highest standards and to ensure that all students have equal access to learning. Our aim is to enable all students to engage actively in their learning and to achieve their best.

In deciding how we spend the Year 7 Catch-Up Premium, we recognise that not all students take the Key Stage 2 tests and there will be cases where these students in Year 7 are not yet working at the expected end of Key Stage 2 level; we do not directly receive funding for these students from this fund. As such, the school will sometimes involve any students or groups of students the school has identified as needing additional support in reading and/or mathematics to achieve the best results in all subjects.

In allocating this fund consideration will be given to those students who:

  • have not attained at the expected level in reading and/or mathematics at Key Stage 2 as identified by the national curriculum tests.
  • are currently working below the expected level in lessons.
  • have a below average reading age.
  • achieve below the expected level in the October Year 7 mathematics test.

How we allocate the Year 7 Catch-Up Premium

Academic year: 2019-20

The Year 7 Catch-Up Premium was used to support a variety of strategies, enabling us to tailor our approach depending on individual student needs:

  • Year 12 Buddy Readers during form time
    • Members of staff coordinated Year 12 students who regularly read with Year 7 students
    • In addition, Year 12 students continued to read with Year 8 students, identified in the previous Catch-Up cohort.
  • Maths Box online resource
    • Supervised and supported by the Learning Support Department
    • Students were able to access the resource at home
  • Identification of appropriate resources to assist with development, e.g. books for reluctant readers, e-readers, Numeracy Ninjas
  • Provision of suitable English (NGRT Reading test) and mathematics tests to measure the start and end point of students’ progress

Measuring the impact of the Year 7 Catch-Up Premium

What evaluation measures do we use?

  • We use the Key Stage 2 SATs test scores to give an expected GCSE grade. Students’ progress towards this grade will be reported at regular stages throughout the school year and this will form one aspect of our analysis of the impact the intervention has made.
  • Reading tests are taken at the start of Year 7 to establish an initial reading age, then identified students are re-tested at the end of Year 7.
  • Attendance at form-time intervention sessions.
  • Student voice: students are interviewed at the end of the year.

Impact of the expenditure on students

In 2019-2020 44 students were identified for support with their reading and 10 students were identified for support with their numeracy.

Literacy

The 44 students were tested via the NGRT Reading test at the start of Year 7 and participated in the Buddy Reading scheme. Some of the students were also part of the Reading Wise improvement strategy.

Numeracy

The 10 students were tested at the start of Year 7 and then completed a programme of Numeracy Ninjas with a dedicated member of the learning support team with a specialism in mathematics.

Note: due to the national lockdown and school closures for students in Year 7 from March 2020 to September 2020, the end of year testing did not take place. Student progress will be mapped across Year 8 and the students will form part of the whole school catch-up plan. A literacy mentor and a science and mathematics mentor have been employed by the school to support this programme.
